FreeBSD 4.6 freezing at "probing hardware"

uninstalling XFree86 in FBSD

I'll give it a shot! :) I believe that you will need to remove XFree86 and all the dependent ports/packages. Do a pkg_info to get a list of all packages and delete all the X dependent ones first using pkg_delete <name>. You may also be able to do a "make deinstall" for all the x specific...

Questions regarding MS Exchange

I am assuming you setup Exchange 2000, what OS ? Again, I am assuming it is a MS server OS. Check these links http://www.sbslinks.com, http://www.sbs2000.info. They are for Small Business Server 2000, but I think they will work for Exchange configuration on a non-SBS server machine as well.

What OS should I run on this older system??

If you have an older licensed Windows OS, I would say Win XP home, Amazon has an upgrade for like $60. I think W2K, or Win XP should work.

Best OS for an all-purpose server? W2K Adv Svr or W2K Pro?

I would say any *nix flavor. If you are new to Unix try a Linux distro otherwise FreeBSD. I would also pick an OS with a smaller footprint, especially since most of them will support ftp. If you decide on windows go with Apache and be careful with anonymous ftp, or at least monitor the traffic...

what makes linux not unix?

Technically Linux is a kernel, every distro makes it a full blown operating system. Some folks argue that it is all Unix, some people call it Unix-like (i.e. it emulates Unix). *BSD followers say *BSD implementations are closer to Unix (since *BSD inherited from AT&T Unix dynasty).
