Which is the leanest MS Server OS which will provide roaming profiles on 5 PCs?

98 won't get you roaming profiles, for that you need domain logins which only a domain controller will provide. You have either Windows server class OS's or you have linux, but since you're talking windows, you could get whatever version is available. 2k would probably do what you want, and...

Setup a mail server

Then nix the sendmail talk. Don't know what NT/2k has, I think there's a low overhead server in IIS, nothin like exchange, but just mail. You will probably still want to look at the MX record part though, that helps the other person's mailer or SMTP server know where to send the mail data to.

self made firewall specs

Although the discussion of ipf/iptables capabilities is really cool, really, to toss some fodder to the original question, there are some things that will kill your firewalls performance. We tested running a vpn tunnel, can't remember exactly what, but I think it was ipf and solaris 8's vpn...

Setup a mail server

It's pretty easy to set up something like sendmail to do mail serving for whatever you have. I believe you have to set up your MX record in the DNS for your domain to point to your hostname. I haven't done it for a long time but I have one for my dyndns domain and it works. Your server config...

VPN out from behind a Linux firewall (RedHat 7).

If you were using iptables, I could give you the exact line to add to your firewall script. Is the 2.4 kernel in 7.0? I can't remeber.. But, what you need to do, most likely, is add a rule that forwards protocol 47 through. It's not done automatically by the standard pass-all rules. Protocol...

Is one of these TS solutions any more/less secure than the other?

So do you have a 2 firewall setup? One outside the DMZ and one doing fw/routing duty for the internal? If that's the case and you have other DMZ hosts then #1 is less secure. The reason being that if you have another box get hacked in the dmz it could then have unrestricted access to the TS...

Stupid Linux Question.. Where are stuff installed?

Well if you were to look at what the actual meanings of most things, there's much more logic to it than first meets the eye. /etc is for configuration data. You can look up why it's called that (i just read it someplace but can't remember) but that's where it goes. home/.appname is usually...

Newbie to Linux needs control system project advice

If you're using Kylix then you may like to use Async Pro when they actually release their products' source. We use them at work for some pretty stuff. For clarts you could use perl, I don't know how but I think it's in there, I think webalizer uses something like that to make their graphs...

Help with MMC over VPN

Try to map a drive over the vpn to your machine at work. That will kickstart your authentication. I'm sure there are other ways too... If I understand you correct, you're just running a workgroup model at work? No domains?

Hung on RedHat 7.2 bootup...

Are you sure it's actually hanging or just pausing for a really long time? Gotta ask, sorry. If you have another drive, install on that and mount the first drive and look at the log files. It's most definately there. ...and for gods sake, get rid of telnet, and I'm guessing wu-ftpd too.
