Anyone have a Vostro?

from what i've heard they are pretty much the same as their equivalents in the dimension/inspiron lines. They don't have crapware, which is nice. They look much more businesslike, which IMHO is a good thing, and i've heard the build quality is better, at least in their notebook line, although...

Laptop - which brand?

Personally I wouldn't advise it, for several reasons: 1) It is awfully heavy for a 15" laptop - 1.7" is pretty thick! 2) desktop replacement laptops generally require a huge power brick (like my old HP) which adds like another 2lbs to your carrying weight. 2) I've never heard of the brand...

Laptop - which brand?

yeah the performance is decent but the driver support is pretty bad. I think the newest lenovo drivers are 101.45, which is really old. My standards aren't that high on a laptop though - i just want to play Civ 4, C&C 3, etc. which run very well. And my laptop doesn't weigh like 500 lbs like...

I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad t61 and I have to say I'm really impressed with it so far. They are having lots of sales on these things right now, so they aren't as expensive as they used to be - I got a pretty nice 14.1" widescreen one with a T7300 and quadro NVS 140M for under $1000 (of course...

Questions before buying a laptop

I just bought lenovo t61 the other day (they are priced really nice right now with the 10% off coupon from *****). I went with the T7300 because I wanted the 4MB cache, but i figured the T7500 and T7700 simply weren't worth the money (the performance gains are only 10 or 20 %, respectively)...

Intel planning a penryn Price drop?

i doubt there will be a price drop, but I imagine that you'd be best served by waiting for penryn. I've heard the q6600s are pretty limited in their overclocking potential (many top out around 3GHz) simply due to too much heat generated by 4 65nm cores. at 45nm, I'd imagine that heat would be...

HD video encoding

thanks for the input - i am considering getting a quad-core CPU, but I'm going to try and wait for penryn and grab one of those - i imagine at 45nm there should be some serious overclocking potential without too much heat, plus it will have larger cache and SSE4 which should help with the video...

HD video encoding

I am currently ripping my HD-DVD collection to WMV pro in 720p, and throwing them all on a huge external hard drive to play on my xbox 360. It is a complicated process, but I finally have the ripping, demuxing, audio splitting etc. down. When I am done I feed the VC-1 or AVC video to Windows...

Transcoding to the 360 with 5.1 audio solution

you can try eac3to, it takes ac3 and ddp files and converts them into 6 mono wav files. Then you can enter "multichannel wav source" in windows media encoder and add each one manually. It's kind of a pain, but its the method I have to use to get my HD-DVD encodes to play on the xbox 360.

L2 Cache 2mb vs 4mb

I've heard that 1MB chips suffer a huge performance hit relative to the 2MB chips - as much as 15% or more in games. 2MB versus 4MB, on the other hand, is only around 1-2% in most apps, sometimes as high as 5%. It seems that Intel chips generally have a bottleneck point relative to L2 cache...

Barcelona runs at 3.0 ghz

i'm glad for them, this at least means they aren't totally F@#Ked, but no doubt this is an extremely cherrypicked CPU. they still have a lot of ground to make up though - Penryn has been demonstrated at 3.33GHz, and some of the better QX6850s seem to be capable of 3.75GHz or more. One thing...
