I only meant that a dedicated piece of equipment is usually better than a PC for a specific task. However, if you already have certain components and are on a budget, it could make sense. Personally, I love having a PC integrated into my home theater (a pretty grand term for a thirty two...

Can I flash my bios with a CD rom?

Also, you almost certainly have a used computer parts store locally where you can pick up a used floppy for a couple of bucks. I have one next door to my MicroCenter where I picked one up for about six bucks.

I've never slipstreamed Vista, but I would assume the concept is the same: the install program looks for certain directories on the source disk. If you can make an ISO image from the original disk, then you can overwrite those directories with the updated information.

the above posts are correct. you need to make a slipstreamed winxp install CD or DVD that contains the necessary drivers. This site can be helpful: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp. It tapers off toward the end, in my opinion, but it has a lot of useful info on how to actually go...

Do alot of you still use mousepads?

Yes, they preserve the surface you are using. I had a wood desk that I did not use a mouse pad on, and the finish ended up wearing down noticeably. It also feels better to rest your wrist on something soft. I did use a blank sheet of paper for a while though.

For a small budget today, rolling your own Socket 939 is the way to go. You won't have many upgrade options in the future, but for a system that would be good now and last a few years, Socket 939.

Finalizing my purchase

Looks good. Only one reviewer mentioned using G.Skill DDR2 with that Gigabyte mobo, but the review was favorable. You're lucky to save cash on the extra stuff too. I'm building a system right now as well, for a family member. With the goal of constructing a mid-range, high-performance...

External Hard Drive recovery

It sounds like that drive is failing or has failed. You could try connecting it directly to the motherboard directly bypassing the external case. But if the drive is dead already, you'd get the same error. I don't know how to recover data from a failed drive.

Switched LCDs, not BF2 doesn't open

My first guess as far as the app not opening would be that the video resolution is set too high in the game software. As far as the other symptoms...it's hard to say.
