Going from Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional

I haven't seen anything about an offer for Pro at the student price. Where exactly did you see this?

I picked up the e6300 last night for one of my new Win7 machines. I couldn't believe the processor I was getting with basically throwing in an MSI mobo free. Got everything running including the OS in about an hour.

Hitachi Deskstar 1TB HD31000IDK/7K - $69.99

I just picked one up last night and Win7 is giving the drive a 5.9 score, which is about as good as any non-RAID drive is going to get. It is 32MB cache.

v1 to v3...

My advice is to install XP on a newer, and proabably faster, HD. Then setup your old HD as a slave device and pull all of your files off that. They you have a spare drive available that you can keep copies of your important files so the next time your mobo fails, or more likely, your HD...

Best Linux Distro for MythTV

So the concensus seems to be veering towards a Debian based solution. Knoppmyth may do the trick, except I was hopeing to do some gaming on this machine as well. nothing serious, just the few multiplayer titles that are available which mean I'll probably have to setup a Windows environment on...

Would Win2000 be better than XP for gaming on laptop?

I'm running XP pro with 512mb and a Sempron 2400+ and I haven't ever run into any issues with regards to gaming. I never did like 2000. I would run 98se for games until XP came out.

How much is your cpu overclocked?

Did it today. 2400+ to act like a 2800+ or 1.67GHz to just under 2.0GHz

Yep, only reformat during a mobo change. Let BIOS take care of the chip.

Overclocking question

I'm trying to think. This morning I pushed my Sempron 2400+ from 1.67 to 2.0GHz just by going from 166FSB to 199FSB. I won't deal with the RAM, so I'd leave SPD as is. Assuming you have a program to verify your clock setting (AMD has one on their website), just bump up the FSB in increments...
