I have to admit I've heard a lot of stuff about different PSU's over the years.
Funniest experience I had was while living in Hong Kong and picking up a PSU at the Golden Compter Centre Market for around US$7 somewhere in the basement area. That PSU ran for around 10 years in various...
Well hooked up as many items as possible but still the same issue - in the bin it goes I guess - still weird that it gives all the right values though....
I've experienced PSU's that are as dead as a doornail, but I've never encountered a PSU that powers up and the drives activate, fans spin etc but the system wont boot/post.
Even when you put a voltmeter across the terminals the correct voltages are being recorded...?
Put in another PSU and the...
I have an Ultra Xfinity 600W (SLi) PSU that is brand new but has been unused for a few year sitting in a nice dry air-conditioned cupboard.

Cheers for the advise Matt but in XP the options appeared to be different without the USE Default Settings button - at least that's what my mum said anyway ;)
I got her to download a program called Unhide.exe and fortunately all is now well with her account again.
Thanks for all the help...
Well so far it appears that the virus has been killed - the often ignored step to getting the thing killed is to make sure you turn off the real System Restore on all drives, otherwise it just keeps coming back.

Yeah we took the safe mode route from the beginning but the virus still runs.
It seems to block out desktop icons and if you go to the programs via the start button nothing is listed.
I did manage to get malwarebytes running by telling my mother to browse for it through My Computer...
My mother has reliably informed me that her computer has the "Windows Restore" virus - I've been trying to help her remotely after reading some solutions on the net which generaly include downloading a program called RKill and once it's done its magic running Malwarebytes.
Per this link...
Just noticed this tablet on offer over at SD which might be a solution - I'm not sure about tablets due to possible screen damage - I'd prefer the clamshell design at the end of he day.

Coincidentally my Gateway FX replaced my trusty Inspiron 9300 and by comparison it was like greased lightning.
The Gateway FX is now approaching the end of it's "gaming laptop" life but continues to be a very decent machine.
One thing that I made sure of when upgrading from the Inspiron...
Thanks for the suggestions - I'll certainly read a few reviews and keep my eye open.
The AMD processors sound promising.
I'm not fixed on $200 but happy to find a $300 netbook for that price of course :D
