Help me understand PCIE lanes.

Thank you for that. It was an interesting read. It also confirms what I suspected (nice to be right for once). x16 at PCI-e 3.0 is significant overkill for current graphics cards. x8 at PCI-e 2.0 even seems to be largely sufficient though I suspect we're on the cusp of that no longer being true.

Nice info. One thing I read in another article is that it's going to have 46 PCI-e lanes. I don't know what their source for that is but as someone obsessed with high-speed storage and lots of it, that's another strong positive.

Should AMD release an updated 8 core FX (improved cores, smaller process)?

I would. I'm currently waiting to see how a few things play out before spending the large amount of money necessary to upgrade from where I am (an FX-8350). A compatible but upgraded 8 core using the technologies refined for Carrizo would make a moderately priced nice little bump in performance...

Whilst I can't know that your script is running without seeing it in action, my strong suspicion is that it's running fine. You could test by adding a line that wrote to a file or similar. Now ask yourself what you would expect to see if your script were running... (no seriously, ask yourself...

How long do you estimate games will need more than 16GB RAM?

Possible but unlikely. You don't even need 4GB today and could do 4K gaming with 8GB reasonably well. So unless the next generation of consoles have enough processing grunt to do 4K resolutions (doubtful to me), there's little reason to outfit them with the amount of memory you would need to do...
