Which cable modem should I buy for my home network?

Can i use my old Prescott for a firewall? PFsense

Either get a firewall appliance of some type (cisco, sonicwall, watchguard, etc) or go with a low power CPU like a VIA, Intel Atom, or AMD low end processor/ITX mobo combo. It's not worth burning the extra power for a Prescott that won't really get used much as a firewall in a home environment.

Commerical grade router/modem to replace crappy westell verizon stuff

If I remember correctly, Verizon uses VPI 0, VCI 35 (or vice versa) plus your PPPoE username/password (none needed if you have a Static IP address). That should be the only settings you need to if you want to use your own DSL modem/router. You could get a Cisco 877 ADSL router. Another option...

How bad to open port 445?

Why not install hamachi on your Windows 7 PC and then on whatever client computer you are bringing with you? Then you can securely access your NAS (and Win7 computer) without opening any ports to the internet. You'd need to leave your Win7 computer turned on however.
