the 8500le will still blow the 9000 outta the water. go with 8500le for best performance IMHO.

Memory reccomendations PC2700 CL2.5 or PC3200 CL3

My own personal advise... take it as you like... if you are going to overclock the system take the 3200 the speed will more than make up for the latency, but if you are not going to overclock take the 2700 cuz the cas 3 latency will draw you back at 333 or 266 speeds... i think the best choice...

Replacing the wife's PC....comments on this?

I used to have this case, it served me very well, study construction, psu's had decent rails, overall good bang for your buck!

On the core of the cpu only. Be careful though, you just need a small amount, putting too much will have a negative impact.

no, you can use the same shim, and yes, you would want to use some kind of thermal grease. AS3 in my opinion just happens to be the best. ;)

ahh... got it... from what im gathering its all single sided so i guess my question is now.... is it still ok to put a heat spreader on single sided ram? (i'm sorry if its a dumb question.)

First off i gotta say I've always been a crucial person myself and this is the frist time i've ever considered switching so I need some help. I want to buy Samsung True DDR 333 2700 ram from newegg.com but my only problem is that the give you 5 different possible versions that you might recieve...

Upgrading an old Athlon 600MHZ

I would get DDR ram and a slightly bettter DDR capable motherboard which would still keep you under the $200 mark and would give much better performance.

Newegg barebone?

Correct, prolly just the cables, manuals, and drivers. I imagine there is no way to know without buying it.... Check ECS's site for the diff's. Should also tell you on the ECS site, but I imagine it would. Well, think about it like this.... the board is prolly just a board that was sent out...
