I'm running a Celeron 1.1A without a fan, without a problem. I have an expensive Zalman copper heatsink on it, though.

Is it relatively safe to plug/unplug devices inside the PC while it's on?

I've plugged fans in and out a thousand times with the system running, without any problem.

Building a New Computer, I'm hung up on the Intel/AMD question. Thoughts wanted :)

Do I really need a floppy drive?

No, you don't need a floppy drive. You can set up an OS from CD-ROM, and you can also flash your BIOS in the same way. But then you do need a CD writer!

No, they're not. As of today, 256 MB of RDRAM cost you between $80-100, whereas 256 MB of Crucial RAM are just $40 @ Newegg.

ASUS A7S333 and firewire capability, please help me

Maxtor quiet drive or Seagate Barracuda IV?

I have used both and I can confirm that the Barracuda IV is a lot quieter than the Maxtor - and I mean A LOT. The Maxtor performs a bit better, but not dramatically better. So if quiet is your priority, I'd say go with the Barracuda.

A 350W PSU is the bare minimum I'd recommend for the system you're intending to build. I think you'll be OK with the Enermax 350W. If you can afford it, though, why not be on the safe side and get a 430W one? That way you'd also have some room to grow... But as I said, if money is a serious...

You will definitely need to upgrade your PSU. The system you're planning to build is quite complex (2 IDE drives, 2 optical drives, 2 RAM sticks, etc.), and the Athlon XP requires a good deal of power too. You should get at least a 350W PSU, maybe even 430W to be on the safe side. I recommend...
