As a side note to these FAQs, if anyone else is using the Madrake 9.0 cooker rpms for mozilla 1.2.1 and have a ton of trouble with them (text boxes not working, windows not opening right, etc), i've found the best way to fix it is to simply uninstall the rpms and install it from the installer on...

is it ok to mount a windows os partition under linux?

It is perfectly okay to mount your windows partition in linux, just take the same precautions as you do when using windows regarding important os files. Havent used it, so im really not sure about the stability of the ntfs driver, but from what ive read here, it seems perfectly okay. --Hob

FTP server for linux?

For the problem in gproftpd, try running it as root...proftpd resides in /usr/sbin/, which is usually only executable as root. For the other problem....not really sure, i have that set in my /etc/proftpd.conf as well, again, it may be a root/user problem. --Hob

Try gproftpd...you'll need proftpd installed as well. I don't really like guis for the sort of thing that you can do without, but i've heard good things about this from some friends. --Hob

I need help with linux.....

NorthernLove - Why would you install apt-get on Mandrake? It's a great package manager, but Mandrake has a great one already in urpmi. It basically does the exact same thing as apt but works with the official Mandrake ftp mirrors. Plus it comes pre-installed and set up to install packages...

Mandrake 9 and IRC

If you don't have xchat installed already, you can use urpmi to install it from the install cds. Go to a terminal, type "su" (without quotes), and enter your root password. At the prompt you get, which should have a # as opposed to a $, type "urpmi xchat" and follow the instructions it gives...

Networking in Linux from scratch

How do I set up my network card in linux from scratch? I have a cable modem with a static ip and a 3com network card, and i set up the /etc/rc.d/network file just like they said in the manual, but when i boot to the lfs kernel, the network doesnt come up. Any ideas? -Hob
