Best Linux distro for old Dell Inspiron 6000?

I would give bodhi linux a try http://www.bodhilinux.com/download/ the 32 bit uses ~200 MB at idle. This is a minimalist distro but the appcenter has all the standard stuff. Their forum is very helpful also! it is based on Ubuntu 14.04

Suggestions for a Dev/Linux laptop

System 76 only supplies support and drivers for Ubuntu 14.... The SSD is a simple upgrade there is also a slot for an mSata drive but the mSata (and RAM) are not easy to access

How long do you use/keep a laptop?

Swapping HDs in laptop, new one won't boot... please help [FIXED!]

I just did something very similar last night, i backed up my boot ssd, fully formatted a spare Hdd, restored the image that i just created to the HDD and it booted fine. You may want to try formatting before restoring the partitions.

I have run into a problem

Since you get no response from the disk, try it in another computer just to rule out a bad disk. (you can boot from it and cancel the install before any changes are made).once you get the install media to work this will be helpful...
