why not have it set up like a turbo button, backup the whole 2 gb to a real hard drive when its not being used. when you are going to be on the computer transfer it all to the ramdrive and enjoy the instant load times
you might be better off ripping the images to your hard drive then using alcohol 120 or daemon to mount them all. you can have dozens of cdrom drives all with whatever cd your program needs.
put some alchohol (the cleaning kind) on a qtip and rub it on the back of the cartridge and the contacts on the printer itself. let it dry for a sec and try again.
the new hp 1012 is a nice printer, only $200 and the first page is almost instant. gets about 15-17 ppm which isnt the greatest but the fast first page makes up for it imo
get a tablet pc she'll be able to take notes in class easily, you can get that to cost a couple thousand with all the options, a port replicator and a 20" LCD
