OP-Is size a consideration? If not then go to Ebay/Craigslist and get a Sony GDM-FW900. Lag non-issue and better color reproduction than the LCDs. Also better black levels. Lcds will have better geometry.
It is big and bulky. I have one and it's fantastic for gaming. When they originally came...
I'll need to go back and do some research. From what I understood the Xfire software was advanced enough to use the slower card to perform menial tasks freeing up the faster card. Not huge performance increases but depending on the second card would provide some boost. It's been awhile so I...
I may be wrong but I thought that was the main difference between Crossfire and SLI. With SLI you had to have matching cards but with Xfire you could have different cards. The 3870 would be for extra help not a 50% load match.
So it looks like in the separate benchmarks 4850 x2 is a little faster then 4890. In Farcry 2 it appears that the 4850 x2 is way ahead of the 4890.
However, not sure how well the 4850 x2 OCs and it looks like most 4890s should be able to reach 900mhz OC levels.
Right now current price for...
According to Egg Sapphire has already issued a 4870 2gb Vapor-X card

To OP: I am hoping that when 4890 comes out prices will drop on the 4850 X2 2gb. Down 20 or so and I'll seriously consider it.
Can't argue with that. In fact I was planning on waiting until the 4850 x2 2gb went down a bit but could not resist that MSI 4870 1gb with $25 rebate on ZZF. Performance will be lower than the 4850 x2 but $111 cheaper AR. Went ahead and took the plunge. Thanks for the link.
Sorry, was looking at the Egg, not ZZF, my fault.
Edit: Although at NewEgg no shipping cost and comes with Rainbow6 game. On ZZF there is 7.54 charge for shipping (For my zip code) which makes total cost 191.53 minus 25=166.53 with no game versus 175 w/game. Is Rainbow 6 vegas worth 10 extra?
I just checked the Egg and they dropped the price on the 4850 x2 2gb. Not a lot but went from 290-280 with free shipping. The 1 gb model is at 245.
OP-Couple of options. I have not checked your mobo rig to see if Xfire is avail. If it is you could look at getting a 1gb 4850 for $140 now and...
Depending on how much of a cheapskate (Raises hand) you are you could hold off till April 6th. Rumor mill has it that ATI will release the 4890 then which may drop prices on everything else. What is your price range at the moment?
Interesting, the article states that the memory for this card is GDDR3, whereas other articles are specifically mentioning GDDR5. Wonder if Gainward reworked the card for release across the pond?
If you can handle the size and bulk then a used Sony GDM-FW900 is the way to go. Con is Geometry. Pluses include that you can scale resolution without quality loss. Something LCDs struggle with.
Also, very good viewing angles. And killer black levels/color reproduction. I currently have Dell...
From what I understand ATI has newer drivers that supports the 4850 x2 much better. Since this test was done three months ago I would love to see an updated version. Right now Sapphire 4870 1gb is 200 and the Sapphire 4850 x2 2gb is 290 on the Egg.
Which seems to be about right in view of...
