Keep in mind there are some LCD monitors that feature 120Hz. These are simply monitors and aren't those that have tuners. I think there will be more LCD monitors that will have TV-like features: 120Hz, LED backlight with local dimming, motion interpolation, etc.
Going from 22" to 24" makes a big difference in many ways. You get more pixels: 1680 x 1050 --> 1920 x 1200. Although there are some 22" that are coming out that have 1920 x 1080. So you can stick to 22" and get extra pixels that way. In terms of gaming, as long as you have enough GPU power...

Your concerns are valid. In a bright room it is better to go with LCD. If you had a dark room, plasmas in general would be the better choice. Of course if you have no budget limitations top-end models from either technology would work very well.
Since you will be playing games off of the PS3...
