As per Intel's data sheet:

It states at 2.11.3 " Overshoot events that are <10 NS in duration may be ignored", that's why I am thinking that duration has something to do with it.
I don't think that is 100% accurate bob, it appears that the power management design of the motherboard would have the last say as to the extent of the transients vs any voltage set in the Bios. The article referenced by Gillbot would seem to confirm this.
NICE article, I just wish they could...
The unknown IS the length and duration of said spike. At 1.35v (W/LLC) it could go to 1.6v (who knows) and at a duration that would cause problems or it may be very voltage dependent so reducing the voltage slightly could have a big impact on the length of the spike. These and many others are...
Geeze, I didn't start until the 386. Glad to see there are some old farts like us still around.
On another forum I frequent, a young man decided to OC his i7 920 with an EVGA board and didn't do much research on Bios settings. He didn't notice the "+" in the space he was entering his vtt...
Finding the correct load vcore isn't the issue (by the way my vcore would have to be set at 1.44v in bios W/vdroop/vdrop) the issue is if the transient overshoots that increase when you enable LLC/volt mod which is reported to be a bad thing and bring about an over/under voltage condition. The...
I don't know if you have changed this or not, but on another thread here you stated your vtt was set to 1.4v. The max as stated by MrK6 is 1.21v. When I first got my MB UD4P the Bios stated max at 1.31v and an updated Bios has it down to 1.21v now.
Also the "safe" vcore is 1.4v and the absolute...
Gillbot, this LLC debate has been ragging for some time now and everyone seems to have very logical and scientific theories for their side of the issue but I've yet to see any scope data (not illustrations) of the effect to prove it one way or another.
I've got an Asus P35 MB that doesn't have...
Like you state, there are variables in the cores and the heat output of said cores. Intel is just playing it safe by giving everyone a low Tcase temperature as the recommended thermal max, which a lot of people mistake for core temperature but that's not a bad thing as the tcase would be a...
The pencil mod just does away with the vdroop/vdrop so you can lower your vcore and still remain stable. Years ago there wasn't an LLC option in the Bios to minimize the vdroop/vdrop so you had to manually mod the board with pencil mod or other voltage mods. Some say its good some say it's bad...
Andy, you can do away with all this by removing the pictures of both the cooler and AS5 and just explain to people that your cooler and Tim choice will effect your OCing potential and link to the case and cooling section for research. It's not taking anything away from the effectiveness of the...
Since the i7 8xx series uses the B1 stepping, you may have passed up on a new revised stepping for the 9xx series and just didn't known it. Probably not though.
