X87 chipsets have 16 pci lanes. Those mobos "can" run 3 way sli, it would just be 8x, 4x, 4x (adds up to 16 lanes). which less than ideal. You want at least 8x per lane, which can only be accomplished with a plx chip, which are very expensive. Think around $400 mobos (Maximus Extreme, MSI...

My Xfire gets 18500 overclocked, so your score is a little low, but not too far off. Try OC and see what you get.

GTX 680 Sli vs HD 7970 CF for large resolutions

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either. If I bought today, I'd prob get 680s b/c its $100 cheaper (for 2). I haven't had any problems with drivers but I trust nvidia's driver support more than AMDs...

MSI 7970 Lightning Spotted at CeBIT

Paying for a lightning just takes the risk out of getting a dud reference overclocker. Sure you can get a great overclocking reference, but that definitely isn't always the case. Nice cards, if I didn't already have 2 reference Sapphires, I'd pay a little extra for these cards. My guess is $650...
