Worthy Upgrades from Old Modem

I'm not sure what Charter is doing post-merger, but I know TWC was essentially halving the available speeds from what the modems are capable of doing. If you have 100Mbps service, you will want to get at least an 8 channel downstream modem, 16 or higher would be better, just in case things change.

Learning BSD vs Linux from scratch.

It's not that bad. Use Nvidia GPU, be very picky on your wi-fi card or just use Ethernet, and all is well. There have been huge gains recently in support for GCN AMD GPU and post Haswell Intel IGP. Software wise, there isn't anything for "normal" desktop usage you can run on Linux that you...

Shudders at the thought - H110 means single channel memory instead of dual channel, which has been the standard for years. Why would you want to cripple your performance that much for a gaming system?

Is there a reason to change the gateway from .1 to .254?

Some routers will only allow the DHCP pool to start after the address of the gateway. Not a good design, but something to watch out for. Essentially, that would shut off DHCP if you set the gateway address to .254

What's up with recommending a H110 for a gaming machine? Only 1 DIMM per channel, so will be very restricted on memory bandwidth. The B150 and H170 motherboards are not much more, and offer much better features/performance.

My wired connection is slower than the wireless.

only if you exceed the maximum length in the Ethernet specification, which is 100 meters. Cabling issue is going to be poor connectors, smashed or kinked cable, etc., not signal degradation over length.

Crucial MX200 Performance with new Firmware
