Your mother didn't cause this. At least, not by putting it on the carpet. There's a BIG difference between handling electronic components while standing (or god forbid, walking) on carpet and placing a finished, grounded chassis down on top of it. (And people walking on the carpet nearby would...
This happens because the Windows install routine checks for other installed operating systems before it asks you where to install and whether to format. If you install to the same drive as a previous Windows install it'll still setup the boot menu as if the old Windows was still there. I guess...
I'm in the all drives can fail camp. I don't really believe that one brand is better than another, although I do generally prefer WD myself. Call it personal preference.
I have an 80GB Seagate that won't work properly on a cold boot (actually, it could conceivably be a problem with the...
Actually, you may have to be careful depending on the motherboard BIOS. AFAIK, some X16 slots are implemented in such a way that only video card will work in them.
There's no good reason that it wouldn't work though, and in fact it should work, but you'd need to do some research to find out...
I'm upgrading tomorrow to an Athlon 64 based system using a Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939.
This is the first time I've used an nForce based board... any hints, tips, suggestions? Drivers to make certain I have, drivers to avoid? That sort of thing... ?
So I'm reading reviews on this power supply on Newegg and they're conflicting.
1 says that it does have SATA power connectors, the another says it does NOT.

"and not looking to ditch my current vid card yet" = ... seperate from the money issue, I don't play DooM3 or HL2 (not at the moment anyway)...
A friend of mine recently picked up the 710N for Christmas.
I haven't seen it yet, but said friend has been extremely happy with it. IIRC, it also got a pretty favorable review at Tom's not long ago in some 17" LCD shootout or something like that.
"AMD's dual core socket 939 processors were also running in a back room on ASUS' A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboards - without modification. Although we had known for some time that dual core would only require a BIOS update on AMD motherboards (at worst), the knowledge that off-the-shelf motherboards...
IIRC, this won't actually work in SLI mode, however, the drivers have an option (via a little checkbox that enables/disables SLI) to disable SLI mode and simply run the 2 cards as 2 individual cards.
In SLI mode this wouldn't work.
In 2 card mode, it should work fine.
