DVR / DVD Recorder

We have a DVR from our local cable company. Other than the small disk ? it works great. We would like to record shows from our DVR to DVDs for watching in other rooms, and freeing up disk space. I did a Google on DVR / DVD RECORDERS and found reviews ? all of which were at least 2 years...

Since Sam?s Club has such a liberal return policy ? can I buy this thing, take it home, open it up and be able to tell what is really inside??? I don?t really know how to ask this question, so I?m hoping you will understand? :-) The last time I was in Sam?s ? they did not have this turned on.
