You can use regedt32. But you still are going to loose any files that were installed into the system folder.
(so you should archive your WINNT folder into a zip file)
It is a simple way to read/write files to remote server. If you don't need it then you don't want it. Personally I've only used it to upgarde firmware on managed switches.
If its a new MOBO make sure you install the MOBO drivers before you install the modem. Miniport routing drivers definitely have a big effect upon your modem.
