I made my old laptop drive into a portable one

Best bet is to just to format the disk or if needed repartition the disk then format it.

Backup Strategy?

create raid without floppy drive?

To my knowledge XP and prior won't scan a CD for RAID drivers on install (F6 on CD boot), if your adding the RAID as extra storage then you should have no problems loading the drivers off the CD from in windows.

Windows Xp restart leads to no post on bootup

Might be reading this wrong but sounds to me like something is crashing on shutdown, my machine switches the video off before windows has completly shutdown which is what you could be experiencing. As you say it only does it sometimes and on restarts its gonna be hard to spot the problem. Hate...

Sorry about your drive mate, if its less than 3years old you may find it still have a manufatures waranty. As for the hacker, let it fly, I highly doubt he did it but maybe it will put him off doing it again :)

Please help with my Serial HD and WinXP

The P stands for Paralell ATA, S stands for Serial ATA. As for the drivers you need to extract the downloaded file and copy the files from the dir containg the txtsetup.oem file (copy dir contense not the dir to the floppy) there are 2 version of the driver one if your using raid Si33112r and...

Well at least it detects it, do you still have the old drive to hand that you could swap over again? Also did you format the drive in the pc before putting it in the case? I assume the IDE connector is notched so its in the right way and you connecting it via USB2, apart from that I'm sort of...

K, :/ is your USB controller showing anything connected to it in device manager, you also mentioned your laptop before, have you tried it on that aswell? EDIT : Change the View to by connection.

PSU disaster - finnaly replaced and now more problems.

LOL amazing, wish I had your money. Guess your the sort person that throws things away cause the battries are dead. I for one can't afford to buy a new pc everytime something fails.

WinXP 'System Cache'

Ah now I see, make more sence, the only other question is I have 248MB of swap file in use according to the same screen, why so much dumped to disk (espcially when you consider that adding the PF Usage to the System Cache gives you the total memory) ?

Did you get anything at all when you connected the drive (windows plays a tune when hardware is connected), does the drive sound like its powered up?

Something I found works in the past is to remove the system memory, some mobo don't fire up at all if the memory is bad. Try none, you might get beeps, if you do try a single stick and then swap them to see if it works with either.
