Wireless inline volume control?

Ubuntu 12.04 good for older Acer laptop?

My favorite method on old hardware is to install Ubuntu 11.10 Server first with only the default packages. (SSH is ok if you intend to use it.) Then "apt-get install lubuntu-desktop" will get you on your way.

I've considered VirtualBox, but I'm looking for comparable performance between my two guest operating systems, and bare-metal virtualization is just more fun anyway. ;-)

Ubuntu 12.04 good for older Acer laptop?

Lubuntu is nice, and supposedly 256MB is doable, but I doubt it would be enjoyable for you. I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 kicking around with 256MB, and I ended up just keeping it for console work. (Project Gutenberg is pretty cool if you use Lynx.)

That's a better work-around than what I had in mind, and I might consider limiting it to a certain number of attempts before dying completely. I'd still like to know the root cause, though.

Installing Win7 - Use recommended settings or Install important updates only?

Our browser/ActiveX/Java VPN solution was broken with one of the recent "recommended" updates, and we found IE9 was breaking certain websites (like Fifth Third and Yahoo). If you're supporting a lot of workstations with limited IT resources, I'd definitely stick with "important only".

Is horsepower your only goal? I've found that there is a LOT more to the driving experience than horsepower. My dream daily driver would be a Factory Five GTM.... about $30k-$40k completed.

why doesn't the US change standard work week to 30 hours?

I don't think we'd see a 25% cut in productivity. Being clear-headed and well-rested would increase the efficiency of the workday. There are definitely diminishing returns for the extra hours, especially in a "job" that's not the "career" love of your life. Further still, I'll bet having more...
