asus a8v with a high end video card tends to benchmark and perform slightly better than some of the newer 939 mobos.

sounds like it might be an issue with acpi/apm and power management support. try enabling/disabling apm in the bios to see if there is any startup improvement. under the device manager either computer or power management check that it detected and installed acpi uniprocessor or an equivalent...
