There was a dog food commercial back in the 80's, can't remember the exact name. Think it was "Chuck Wagon". It was that exact way. The dog in the commercial could never catch the "Chuck Wagon" and it would run through the cabinet like a mirage.

Did you put in a maximum bid price? If so, maybe someone bid a price lower than you and since you beat them you then had a "new bid" at the price above theirs.
