How to determine if mb or CPU went haywired?

Did you check that the wires connecting the power switch to the mobo are in the right way? If that's good, I'd think an empty mobo (no CPU, RAM, cards, etc) with default setting should start up (connect a fan to see it)...

Differences between routers and switches

You wouldn't need to use the uplink port. The uplink port exists because hubs/switches/routers and NICs use two different types of jacks and you have to use crossover cable to connect two of the same type, but an uplink port uses the same type as an NIC so you can connect it to another...

Promise RAID/Linux 2.4.12 problems

What is ATM?

I understand that it uses small cells and it's supposed to be fast, but why is this used? what's the differences between this and ethernet, other than packet sizes? what's asynchronous about it?
