add an entry in the /etc/hosts file for the win2k box, and then you should be able to ping by hostname.

the second part is the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for your computer, and the third field is the hostname. mine looks like this: 192.168.0.103 <tab> neuron.k.net <tab> neuron since im still largely a newb to linux i havent set up a domain or anything but so far, having a bogus FQDN...

A way Delete files in XP that say their in use?: Edit: New trick found

make sure to chkdisk your NTFS partition at next boot. Correct me if I'm wrong, but i think that Linux can mess up writing to an NTFS partition.

Recommend a Linux version

Gentoo for its BSD-like ports system (easy installs!) and if you're new to linux, it'll ease you into linux (my opinion), but you'll learn a lot in the process. Also, im sure that other distros do this, but you can set gentoo to build packages optimized for your processor (it makes a big deal...

ok... new question! say i have a process running in an ssh, and my ssh connection dies, but the process is still running... can i reassign my orphaned proces to a new terminal or ssh session?

Heh. I did some research on chrooting last night, and you're right, it wouldnt help much. looks like I'll be hardening my box and then giving them accounts, and learning from the mistakes im bound to make there. ;)

I love this FAQ. and now i have another request : I want to set up a "shell account" type of thing, becasuse since I got started in Linux (Thanks people!) a lot of my friends are looking into it also, and I'd like to give them a way to get familiar with it,without making their own box and such...

Amphibious, about that mouse, we had a lab full of spanking new computers with those mice, and they didnt work in X on Mandrake 8.2 until we disabled the USB modules, and it emulated a PS2 mouse. They were eventually replaced after we figured that out.
