Hey! I'm at my father's house in Raleigh, NC. Internet here is via DSL Modem, specifically a Westell VersaLink 327W courtesy of BellSouth. Except that its wireless capabilities have died out. Since the only way for me to have 'net service in my room is via WiFi, this has me... well, let's just...

malware scanners for linux

Used AVG for years. Then I heard about Avast!... I'm running it now. It's better. Lots better. Note that even the /free/ version has to be registered, though... otherwise it dies in 30 days. BUT... what you need is probably more like Trinity Rescue Kit (aka TRK) -- TRK homepage here. It's...

...and I don't use it because I can't afford it. Sorry, M$, but even when the money was good, I'd find it hard to justify throwing away $30 on a tech who only knew what was on their computer screen. Right now, it's utterly unthinkable. Besides, I've got two forums of nice people (really!)...

Well... I'm running Puppeee (a Puppy derivative) on my netbook right now, from a USB drive. It's actually pretty nifty... :biggrin: ...but I wonder, since it's running pretty well on an ASUS Eee 1000HE, how it'll do on the (slightly modified) thin client...

Well, I've got a thread open on Puppy's forum... we'll see what they say ;) As for tinycore... no offense, but that actually looks worse than DSL, and it seems to have very little functionality compared to what I'm looking for. I want something that essentially amounts to a full desktop OS...

I'm not sure puppy would run on something this crappy ;) BTW, you do need a special flash install -- here's why (this much I understand pretty well). On a regular (mechanical) HDD, you can (theoretically) read-write until infinity happens. There is no inherent maximum number of read- or...

Hi ya'll... I'm a linux n00b... I know a bit of the terminology, and I've dabbled in Ubuntu (and Xubuntu on one box of mine...) but when it gets to looking at other stuff, I'm not so sure of what I'm doing :oops: So... a little explanation of what I'm doing first, then relevant machine specs...

9 year old ups died

APC is virtually bulletproof. Never heard of the other company, but if they're selling something like that for $70... well, I wouldn't trust it with my old 386, nevermind anything worthwhile. Caveat emptor.

need to know if this power supply is upto the mark!

I gotta Antec True430... got it as a scratch&dent 'cuz the ATX connector needed a little repair. I'm currently fixing that little issue. If I fix it correctly and it works, do you want it? [Mods LMK if I'm doing something that isn't kosher. Not sure how For Sale offers go around here.]
