How can I completely neuter BitTorrent on a network?

Close the bit torrent ports and inform everyone to stop using it? The ports are 6881 and 6999 I believe.

can't renew my ip address

How do you try to do this? Do you go to a command prompt and do this . . . ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew Or do you use windows's repair option?

Networking a printer?

After that you install the printer on the laptop using the network optinon instead of local. Will probably ask you for drivers.

Bluetooth as a modem

Good enough for basic web browsing I think. Especially if you'll be on dial up (which I assume you are if you're using the phone as a modem).

Good webhosting for a discussion board?

Posting two threads about the same thing makes baby jesus cry. Lots of web hosts support things like databases and some even simplify the installation of phpBB. Google is your friend. I use midphase but the site has gone down a few times this year for about a day at a time. Thinking about...

Package management, the amont of documentation/support out for them, and relatively easy installs. I use Fedora and it has a bunch of gui administration tools that make it pretty easy. Mandriva is another somewhat newbie friendly distro also. Check out www.distrowatch.org. I've never used...

Fileserver Hardware Requirements?

Put linux on it and use Samba. Hell you could even set it up as a primary domain controller. :)

Fedora, Ubuntu, SuSu, or Mepis are usually the easiest to learn on. I would start off with those and then move on to slackware or gentoo.

Dual Boot Linux

Fedora has a 64 bit version. Pick up a book on ebay or read up @ http://linux.ucla.edu/LDP/ or at any good linux forum for help and such.

Is it safe enough to directly connect your computer to a cable modem?

AT LEAST use zone alarm instead of the windows built in firewall. Pick up a cheap router or use an old computer and put linux on it and use that as a router/firewall.
