Problem was eventually solved. It turned out to be the cable. I bought a RG59 coax and the dropouts were gone.
I guess the new PC was more sensitive to electromagnetic interference.
I got a new Asus A8N SLI Premium. When using the on-board SPDIF to my receiver I'm having a lot of drop outs (like a second of silence) . This happens when playing both stereo and surround sources.

I found out that if I activate the blank screen saver to start a few minutes before the monitor shuts down , then it works.

I've been having a weird problem lately: my Dell 2005FPW LCD monitor won't go into standby, although it is configured to do so in display properties. Sometimes it will work, sometimes not.

I guess I wasn't clear enough about the Ghost issue: I did manage to restore the image in a second attempt, and got the file I needed. I just felt it was important to share the fact that I got a BSOD during a ghost process, after booting from the Norrton CD. I think it could serve as a big hint...
I did get a BSOD with only 2 sticks of RAM installed.
The image was done on the exact hardware setup.
The reason I needed to restore was not related to the BSOD problem - I accidentally deleted an important file.
