Yes. Mplayer now has mult-threaded versions that work well for this.
Plex has also been optimized to work with multiple cores and plays 1080p content just fine (high bitrates too). I think Plex also uses mencoder for decoding.
There aren't many differences.
At my company, we have used VMware workstation, server, and player. One difference in Workstation is the ability to create multiple snapshots as you make changes in the virtual machine. This is useful for QA - which is what we use it for. We didn't see this...

I believe the reference is to high density modules that most PC133 parts come in.
High density sticks do not work in older chipsets (PC100 chipsets - mostly Intel chipsets). I'm not sure if a 64MB stick would really be a high density stick - but you should be fine if you don't have an older...
