Looking at yachts... land yachts!

I have a Lincoln Town Car (1997), and you can't find a car that's more like a yacht. I want something that is: -Under $20k -- super cheap on the used market. 20k would get you almost new with lots of options. -Decent highway MPG (mid 20s+) -- I get 26 or so in mine on the interstate...

Groupon customer service is awesome

Groupon is fine for customers, but I've heard stories about businesses getting talked into setting up really shitty (for them) Groupon deals and losing tons of money.

Robots replacing Surgeons

200 years might be a bit long, but he is right: we are nowhere close to autonomous surgeries. The Davinci robot is amazing (I got to drive one last summer at a conference), but they aren't even trying to give it sensing or autonomy at the moment, because the technology is not there yet.

Best place to buy a new alternator?

I have an autozone alternator in my car. It's a rebuilt unit, but carries a lifetime warranty. It's not been great -- the first one only lasted about a year -- but the lifetime warranty transferred to the replacement. On my car I can swap the alternator in 5-10 minutes, so I don't really mind...

The primary market is research labs at universities, not hobbiests. Robots are expensive. I don't even want to know what a PR-2 costs, and people (robotics labs, anyway) are lining up to get them.

White Water Rafting Trip

I did the Gauley River in West Virginia, and it was a pretty wild ride. Lots of class V rapids, but even though it's got crazy water it's safe enough for novices to run (with a guide steering the boat, anyway). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauley_River#Whitewater_paddling

Hair clippers

I have Wahl clippers that I bought at Target about 5 years ago (~20 dollars, I think). I use them to cut my hair and trim my beard, and they're still going strong.

Softball Bat

Generally they just say the bat must be ASA approved -- most softball bats you can buy will be. Never hurts to double check before you get a nice bat first, though.

I have a piece of SKYNET...

I'm working on a Ph.D. in robotics. I'm working on a robot named Skynet, and we store it in an abandoned nuclear reactor. Skynet also has a ton of lasers -- I think 80 individual lasers. The best part is that 100% of that is true.

Chernobyl Diaries

The area was definitely evacuated and abandoned, but the plant itself was operated until 2000, and although all the reactors are now shut down, plenty of people still work there. Pripyat is abandoned, but the plant is not. They're also replacing the containment structure they threw up over...

What should I do next? Finishing a PhD in engineering

In engineering, a minority of people go on to be professors, which is a very different thing than teacher. I suspect very few people go on to have teaching careers. Most people go work in industry.
