BTW, I used to edit some videos on an overclocked P4-1.3Ghz w/ 2Gb of memoryand it takes forever to render an hour of vacation videos (w/c includes transitions and effects).

The hardware is actually some excess inventory from my cousins company that they are trying to get rid during their recent hardware refresh cycle. Might as well use it.

Ive been out of the loop on hardware for years now and want to upgrade my current 5yr old system (yea its a grandma in tech years).
Was wondering if I need a beefy video card or just a beefy proc & memory (ie. dual Xeon w/ quad core and 16Gb of memory) for a rig just for editing home videos.

I am deciding either to re-install 32 or 64 bit Vista to remove much dell bloatware on my laptop. Since 64 bit opens up the memory to more than 3Gb with minimal software issues, I will be going this way. I know software is moving to 64bit...
I've been looking for a cheap and energy efficient PC for a file server. Is this a good one to use? Since its running Linux, we can re-configure it as a file server.

as far as camera goes, most are still at firewire 1 (iLink for sony), there are already addin cards for firewire 2 w/c is about double the transfer speed, but I haven't seen or heard any camera that supports second gen firewire. who knows some company is already developing on it. :D
more memory, faster CPU, super fast hard drive with lots of space and a very fast transfer mechanism is all you need for video editing. Your evga or quadro is an overkill, its good for games.
