I'm a web developer and an avid gamer. I just put together a new system which is suppose to be both: my gaming system and a workstation. For my work I need to install a lot of software packages that are not game friendly (SQL server hogs all the memory it can). Also, very often I need to install...
I bought Smart Fan II along with Thermaltake's 'ducting mod' about a week ago. It replaced a very quiet panaflo fan and although my temps dropped from ~55 degrees (at full load) to about 45, it is so loud that I can't take it any longer. I installed it with a temp probe that regulates rpms but...
333MHz Bartons are recognized by the BIOS and by default the FSB is set to 333. (166x2). If you want to OC you don't really care if the BIOS recognizes your CPU as 333 or 266, you still want to set it manually to a much higher setting.
As it happens CPUs set by the factory to 333 are having...
Yeah, I read that article and I totally disagree with it. I think FSB makes all the difference
My test using Barton 2500+ on NF7-s
3DMark2001
13x170fsb 2.2ghz = 17041
10x220fsb 2.2ghz = 17828
My 2.0 does 220 and it looks like a limit. I did not do a vdd mod. However this speed was only achieved after cutting L12 bridge on Barton CPU. Before the cut 170MHz!!! was a maximum XP bootable speed (This has something to do with 333MHz bus of the CPU).
First I zapped it with a 9v battery (well known method) and then just to make sure I cut it with a razor. I recommend zapping it with a battery only, but I have a damn swiftech heatsink which you mount to the motherboard holes. It takes me a long time to install a CPU so I just didn't want to...
Today I cut the L12 Bridge (Actually I zapped it first with 9v and then cut it - just to make sure I don't have to do it a second time)
Yesterday booting to XP with RAM over 170 was impossible. Today I'm running stable at 220x10
3DMark: 17828
My 2500 was also unlocked, but on Abit NF7-S I could not boot to XP with RAM higher the 170!!! (was running it at 166x13.5) It was pissing me off so I took the CPU out and cut L12 Bridge. This was just 30 minutes ago so I havn't finish testing yet. I want to bump RAM as high as I can with low...
Five hours later, 3 new installations of XP, 5 recoveries through recovery console I finally got something going. I relaxed RAM timings to 7-3-3 cas 2 and so far everything is running smoothly. I'm at 2210MHz (170x13). I think now with relaxed RAM timings I could try bumping it higher, but I'm...
Here is my setup:
ABIT NF7-S rev 2.0
GAIL PC3500 2x256
BARTON 2500+
Swiftech 462
OC Level II 9700Pro
Seagate Cuda V SATA
XP SP1
Without overclocking I tried 3D Mark 2001se and I got 15120. Then I decided that I need some OC action. I lowered multiplyer to 8 and started to raise FSB. XP would...
