It seems to me that your campus are using an AT&T/Lucent/Avaya type of PBX .
The "call ID" that showed up when you called the 5 digits actually are station name which is programmed by your PBX administrator .
If your dorm phone is an analog, you can not plug it into the digital jack...
I had the SMC 7004VWBR and it has the option for you to turn off the wireless if you want to . You can also set the access via authorized MAC address and turn on WEP encryption . Secure enough for my home use !

Yes , it is possible . I had my SMC 7004VWBR as gateway, DHCP . Since I need more wire ports, I just plug my Netgear ( 10/100 ) switch right into one of my SMC LAN ports . Work fine with my straight RJ45 patch cord and all my LAN is happy in one subnet .
You might need a crossover cord depends...
I have this SMC 7004VWBR when Compusa had it during their 6 hr sale . At first it was very unstable with wireless connection with older firmware . Since I flashed with newest 1.21a firmware, it has been pretty solid and does have a decent range with my Orinoco gold pc card

I have this SMC 7004VWBR and the 4 wire ports are used for my desktops . I also use 2 others laptops with wireless pc cards and they all in the same sub net in this mixed wire & wirelesss configuration . Probably if you had a plain hub, you can plug it into one of those Lan ports and expand...
