Nortel BCM 400 - what ports to open on firewall?

No go for me also. VPN with softphone work fine though while i2004 failed even to register .

Anyone know much about PBX phones??

Hello, It seems to me that your campus are using an AT&T/Lucent/Avaya type of PBX . The "call ID" that showed up when you called the 5 digits actually are station name which is programmed by your PBX administrator . If your dorm phone is an analog, you can not plug it into the digital jack...

HOT or NOT, LiteON LDW-411s $139.93 (black) + DVDxCopy Xpress at Walmart

IMHO , $70/$80 in BB, CC recent deal with DVDShrink ( freeware ) is a better deal . I don't like the Xcopy "warning" thing when create my DVD backup

Linksys BEFSR41W: question

I had the SMC 7004VWBR and it has the option for you to turn off the wireless if you want to . You can also set the access via authorized MAC address and turn on WEP encryption . Secure enough for my home use !

Any thoughts about "Voice over IP" services ?

At work , we use Avaya PBX ( G3r ) and Avaya Cajun/Cisco 6500 switches . Work great with one remote call center location ( 5 miles away ) with one T3 for both data and voice over ip for the last 18 month along with one separate T1 as backup. You can not tell any different in term of voice...

Wireless router shared by 8 port switch?

Yes , it is possible . I had my SMC 7004VWBR as gateway, DHCP . Since I need more wire ports, I just plug my Netgear ( 10/100 ) switch right into one of my SMC LAN ports . Work fine with my straight RJ45 patch cord and all my LAN is happy in one subnet . You might need a crossover cord depends...

For price/performance Orinoco beats them all . Orinoco also works nicely with Netstumbler !!!!

Looking for a good home router

My SMC barricade 7004VWBR ( with firmware 1.21a ) does what you asked for . My VPN connection is using Checkpoint secure remote which I use daily. I also occasionally host ftp without any prob . I don't host game nor Web so I don't know first hand but I think you can easily do it with virtual...

Small network, less than 24 ports. Why use a patch panel? Why not straight into a switch?

Patch panel gimme a nice place to put my label ( jack/port ) . Try to do that with bunch of loose RJ45 cables and you will see !!!

Need advice on wireless routers@!

I have this SMC 7004VWBR and the 4 wire ports are used for my desktops . I also use 2 others laptops with wireless pc cards and they all in the same sub net in this mixed wire & wirelesss configuration . Probably if you had a plain hub, you can plug it into one of those Lan ports and expand...
