Why not run my PSU without its cover/enclosure to cool it better?

I think this may have some benefit, but I'm not sure if it would be enough to be worth it.

Oops, yeah, I should have "helped him out" by giving him a bunch of links (with no text to explain/justify why he should follwo them) to places where he can overpay for components by 20%.

Actually, no, that's just the way everyone THINKS they're supposed to do it. I have a Fong Kai FK320 (?) case right now (heavy as a tank!), with a CPU duct system standard issue, and when you receive the case the rear mounted fan that connects to the duct is installed to blow air OUT, the idea...

Or you can save almost as much, $34, by buying that same thing, but just not at newegg (zip zoom fly instead). Or you can save $64 by buying the same cpu, but OEM from eWiz. All your links are to newegg. do you work for them? are any of them competitively priced? and anyway, i think he...

Advice sought on how to partition for W2K/XP/Linux/Linux multi-boot

I've been reading up on VMWare, and it sounds fantastic (although I do have to wonder about performance, even with enough ram ...) But the $199 price point is a difficult one to swallow. Maybe half of that would be palatable ...

Linux or Solaris -- which to choose?

??? 8 years ago I was using Linux, WinNT4, adn solaris x86 all simultaneously (solaris at the office, linux/nt at home). The hardware for solaris was HP. The stability of solaris (which I agree it has) isn't just about the hardware ...

any ideas on a 754 board with Firewire?

just go to newegg or another well stocked site site that lets you choose all mbs of a certain socket type & then a search w/in results on 1394. Voila, your list.

Download Solaris 10 for Free at SUN

LOL, obviously not a CS dept at a reasearch university. I spent 14 hours a day in front of a solaris WS for a few years :) Course, that was in my own office, not a bullpen.

LOL, if you're an "older guy," I'm friggin DECREPIT. I built my fisrst computer in 1983, and started using computers (mheneywell timeshare) int eh late 70s. The problem isn't that building is no longer cost effective, it's that you seem to be bringing no reflection of your actual needs to...

Thin/Light notebook with good battery life?

oops - never mind i see you said no MORE than 2 lbs. What I described was 2.2 lb. I think it's a bbetter fit than the protege, but it still doesn't meet your criteria. Good luck.
