Is +5VSB necessary when computer is off?

I understand it's used to power on the computer. Is it necessary for it to remain on all of the time though? The BIOS chip has a battery, so it doesn't lose information if you pull the plug on the computer. I've read that the +5VSB rail allows you to use features like turning on the computer...

UPS vs Surgeprotector

I think your equipment will be better protected by getting a mid grade surge protector vs a cheap UPS. I don't know about the expensive UPSs. They're out of my price range. I have a low end UPS ($40) with a ~380 Joule rating (this is supposed to represent how much of a surge it can protect...

You say it won't post. Do you mean you get absolutely nothing by hitting the power button? No leds lighting or fans spinning? Try checking all the connections to make sure everything is plugged in all the way and all cards are seated securely. Is the PS turned on in the back? Is the power...

Anyway to Revive Momentarily a Hard Drive That's Gone Bad?

I don't know why. I would guess that it has to do with the fact that metal contracts when it gets colder. I'm not positive, but I think the majority of the harddrive's moving parts are metal. I think this technique only works sometimes, and generally only for a short while (one or two boots)...

How long can your computer run off your UPS?

Mine has been going for 16 minutes now. :D Edit: 25 min and counting... Edit 2: 31 minutes total on a 500 VA APC unit. (no monitor)

Just what I was going to suggest. In addition, put it in a zip lock bag (before freezing) and suck out the air with a straw before sealing the bag. This limits condensation on the drive.

I don't unplug, but that's because I don't have an expensive computer, and I back up everything periodically. I also don't have anything critical on it. Not unplugging it is gambling, even if you have a surge protector. A surge protector can only handle so much. Some lightning strikes will...

Where can I find the 25W Athlons....

I ran some tests on this a year or so ago. I'm pretty sure there was no temperature difference in my Athlon XP running 15x133 vs 10x200 (both at full load). I could be wrong, and I can't find the numbers now, but this is how I remember it. I think it's only the overall cpu speed that matters...
