External PSU's seem to be the way to go in many situations. They really remove a great heat source from the PC, and are passively-cooled many times to boot! Unfortunately, the shuttle zen is the only sff that I'm aware of that has an external PSU.. well, that and the upcoming Pentium M shuttle...
I actually just picked up a (newegg) refurbed 6600 Vanilla last week for under $100, so there are some options out there. Don't forget about a refurb/used 9800Pro (or less actually) either, they're still very powerful cards when the IQ settings aren't too high.

I might have to try this out tommorrow.. maybe I'll just bring in one of my notebooks, let them install the ram if they hastle me about it, and then take the ram out and repeat at another Best Buy :). Haha, it's worth a try!
