E8500 OC Question

Can you list all your voltages? It will help us see if you're in "ballpark" ranges--of course, voltages very significantly from system to system. Have you read forums and articles on how to overclock? 4 GHz is around the median level where voltage increases for higher speeds start climbing...

Well when I initially started OCing I just disabled pretty much everything...XD, C1E, virtualization, etc. Thermal Temp control went with it.

Well, I did have CPU thermal control turned off in the BIOS, so it is entirely possible that I was hitting temps that high momentarily. Surely if I had kept it up my chip would have been fried. Here's the reasons I think I might have actually hit those temps: -I can hit 85C when running at...

In case anybody's wondering, I've since backed down to a 1700 FSB, which I can run at 1.44375v--I feel safe at this level. Dropped from 28 GFlops to 25, but I guess I'll save myself some hardware problems down the road.

Yeah, I've been realizing that this is probably what I'll have to do. Running on a 1700 FSB gives me 850 MHz linked mem anyway, so it'll be a tradeoff. Thanks for the help/input guys, really appreciated.

Bonzai: that's what I'm thinking right now. I think this is just a bad OC chip. Although 4.2 GHz is not the extreme limit of what can be expected from an E8500...I've seen people get 4.6Ghz on an E8500. I may just have a bad one.

My CPU simple can't run at these speeds with less than 1.475v--I won't even boot into windows. I get BSOD'd. Stress tests fail immediately with anything less than 1.4875v, and until I go up to over 1.5v they fail within a few minutes. I'll try booting right now at 1.375 at my current speeds...

I'm thinking about getting another rad for my system. I have a friend who's been doing this a looooong time. He's got basically the same components (same case, same MB, etc.) and he's putting 3 rads in. the only real way to do it in there is to put two of the rads back to back on the front...

That's correct, but as I said above, the analogy is flawed because two pots of water provide more surface area for the water to cool than do one pot of water. It's more like if you had two tanks of water, each with their separate openings, or two combined tanks of water with still only two...
