home fileserver - athlon 5350?

Hi guys, I'm thinking about building a simple home fileserver, with 1-2 pairs of mirrored 3.5in drives and a gigabit ethernet network. No HTPC duties needed, so I'm thinking Athlon 5350 + AM1 Mobo for low power and low cost? It looks like I can get the pair from Fry's for like $40 total. What do...

if you don't need any gpu/pcie slots, then you could consider a smaller case like an antec isk 110

Most power efficient PC design (w/ light gaming)

My dell s2340m monitor has a 12V 3.33A supply so the actual power usage must be something less than 40watts. No idea how that compares with other monitors..

Is this daisy chaining an electrical hazard?

A short 5000W burst on powerup that doesn't trip a breaker wouldn't start a fire either because they are both triggered by resistive heating that are caused by a combination of power and time. Besides, that has nothing to do with 2 power strips vs 1. If 7 light bulbs are not safe on 2 power...

I don't understand what all the concern is about daisy chaining power strips. The wall receptacles are daisy chained also (usually for receptacles in the same room), so it's not like if you plug your computers into different receptacles, it looks any different to your breakers. As for the power...

Best balance for the money - laptop + home workstation/server configuration

Check out the asus zenbook ux305 that anandtech reviewed back in march. Seems to give you what you want in a laptop for about $700 or so..

yeah, mainly, it's all about that 2nd expansion slot. mitx spec only goes to the first expansion slot, but many gpus are 2-slot for the extra cooling, so many mitx cases actually include space for that second expansion slot. Then looking at matx mobos, the smallest, and often cheapest, ones only...

My last build was 10 years ago. What's changed?

IDE and pci are obsolete. Optical drives are optional now. 2.5in SSDs are common and 3.5in HDs are often moved to NAS. So computers without 3.5in and 5.25in drives end up being much smaller and you are seeing more SSF systems, though full size atx towers still exist. Those are the biggest...

I managed to fit my msi h81m matx mobo in a cm elite 110 mitx case. It required cutting a slit in an internal hd/fan bracket but nothing visible from the outside. I suspect many other pairings would work since many matx mobos are less than full matx size and many mitx cases have a bit extra...

2.7 ohm speakers with 6 ohm amplifier...can I make it work?

Impedance matching volume controls can multiply the impedance 2x or 4x. See monoprice for those. Might want to just buy a new set of stereo speakers instead of putting more money towards those old speakers though.

Will an OEM LGA775 HSF mount on a LGA 1150 board

No, 775 won't fit on 1150. I'm running stock hsf on a 54w i3 and it can get noisy when the cpu is loaded. I don't know how quiet those water coolers are but the zalman cnps8900 cooler i tried on an 88w i7 seems quieter than the stock hsf on the i3.
