I would think it would be far off, at least, before ray tracing becomes heavily used in anything real-time like games. Many of the techniques that are used for speeding up ray tracing can be used with the current rasterization techniques that provide more bang for the buck.

I'd like to learn C# or Java.. any opinions?

I think it depends on the size of your solutions. I can't speak about vs 2010, but all the prior versions are definitely not 100% stable. Our code base is about 2 millions lines of code. It's not unusual to get a few crashes and/or multi-minute freezes per week and I know the other programmers...

Depending on how robust a spell checker you need, and if you can use stuff under the GPL/LGPL/MPL license, you may want to look at hunspell. It's widely used - open office, os x, firefox and others.
