I'm sorry. I should have elaborated. One buys in waves, yes, but of the same type, ie: You might buy the B&W DM602s. Later, with more funds available, you buy a pair of DM604s, larger, more expensive floorstanders and move the DM602s to the rear as surrounds. Same applies to all the others...

Varlhona. They have an 82% that's rather good, and a 72% with candied orange peel and grand marnier infusion that's also rather good as well. EDIT Names: Orange one : Manjara Dark: Abinao Excellent stuff, though rather pricey

Should I upgrade my speakers?

If you are willing to pay the difference, a reciever/bookshelves system would outperform any set of computer speakers(or HTIB, for that matter) I'd recommend the AV123.com merchandise (the x-series). It will cost you perhaps 1000$ all told with reciever, but it's performance will be so far...

New speaker recommendations

I personally recommend just using optical digital out to a reciever you might buy, and then speakers. Focus on that aspect, and it's more flexible, and effective long term. Finally, there is no computer speaker in the world to rival good bookshelves or towers.

On the subject of speaker decay, I recently (finally) purchased a 22 yr old pair of Thiel floorstanders (amazing deal), without any damage. If speakers are well maintained, without foam surrounds, they should last forever driven at medium volumes ~Paul

Need speakers for my ipod and laptop for $200~300

Klipsch iFi. It's got excellent sound, fairly good bass reproduction, and it's by far the best deal. Even if you paid 300$ for it, it would be an excellent deal. The only constraint is the lack of portability.

If you are going stereo, at that budget, the HK is probably your best bet, considering the power ratings (even if they are exaggerated a bit, 100 watts X2 is suitable for nearly everything at that pricerange except the magnepan MMG) If you are spending 700$, your options do open up...

Bose is indeed being very clever. However, a major complaint, price, marketing and teh like aside, is merely the quality of the components. Mirage sells the Omnisat, which looks a bit like an acoustimass module, same small design (though it is somewhat larger and 50$ more expensive) however...
