How much memory is occuppied at bootup on your system?

Xp never show the available system ram to be less than 120 MB (I have 256 MB ram) Linux uses every ounce of ram available, no don't expect more than 10 MB to be free in LInux

Can't run higher than 640x480x16 in GTA3!

man, I could play at 1024*768*32 in my 550 Mhz athlon PC. Maybe driver problem (or maybe ever improper version of directx)

Funny desktop question

Not sure how the problem arose, but you can try this Right click on desktop -> settings->themes select windowsXP and this should revert all changes to the current theme including the desktop. Good Luck

you will eventually find the j2sdk from sun site is the best there is. But an IDE will surely help, try JCreator Pro, its small, fast and very user friendly.

Sure, but make sure you don't install anything higher than Redhat 6.0 or it will be a pain the ass to work with it.

this might sound silly, but why don't you save all your material, create a new user and transfer only the required stuff there. Definitely worth doing before format c: or destroying your comp :-)

Modem conn speed drops w/new phone...

hmmm, you seem to have got something wrong here what the s/w displays is kilo BYTES per second and the modem rating is in BITS per second so 56 kbps modem can get max of 56*1024/8 = 7.1 kBps. The original problem though is very interesting, I've to investigate this further.

Windows 2000 and gaming?

Win2k and games .... ah ah. If I were you I wouldn't ever try it. Best thing, have dual os, use win 98 only for games and install all s/w and related stuff in win2k But if you just want all in one OS, use XP, theres nothing like it (of course linux is, but thats a different story)

DirectX 9.0 issue

The crashing of Max Payne has nothing to do with directx 9 (even if it is, the following works). Download the 1.05 (or something latest) patch for max payne and it works fine
