Storm and lights dimming - pc still on

Modern computer power supplies are of a variety known as switching supplies. They automatically detect the incoming voltage from the wall and take in as much current as they need to feed the system, not matter what the voltage is (within reason of course). This is why if you look at your PSU...

Anyone use Lian-Li cases nowadays? Recommendations?

We used to sell a ton of Lian-Li cases back around 15 years ago. Excellent build quality and features that were light years ahead of everyone else's plain steel boxes. I too bought a PC60 that housed my main PC up until 5 years ago. Other companies caught up to the quality of their cases, and...

Favored MB form factor? (ATX, mATX, ITX - poll included)

My last system I went mITX and I love it. She's in a Fractal Node 304 so I have room for 4 drives, I'm not really missing any features that I want. Next build I may go up to mATX, but I don't think I'm going back to full sized ATX anymore. And no, nobody likes BTX. :P

    Intel Optane 900P

Using Optane as DRAM will definitely have some advantages in specialized fields. For example, an Animation rendering farm that may need to access 1-2TB of textures for any given frame will find that even SSD latency times can slow down the rendering process. Moving the storage of textures off...

Just a fun little story, proving everyone makes mistakes.

My worst mistake building PCs is electrocuting myself trying to connect the PSU to the front switch on an old AT case. I kept the machine plugged in to keep ESD to a minimum while installing the components, but didn't think about disconnecting it before trying to connect the switch. ATX was...

    Intel Optane 900P

Intel's X25 160GB drives were around that price when they first came out, and they were worth it. :) It'll be interesting to watch the tech evolve over the next few years as SSDs have. Hopefully enough people keep buying Optane so Intel keeps improving them.

2-port video card for OLED display and AVR

While you can connect 2 HDMI devices to a video card, the bigger problem at play will be that your AVR must be seen by the computer as a display. Video cards are not designed to output audio-only. Is there a reason you're avoiding connecting the TV to the HDMI output from the receiver? 4k TV...
