Serious Post here...

Anyone know cisco routers?

The may be a separate password configured on con0 that needs to be changed. But I agree, you don't need the current config - kill it off and start from scratch.

Cable vs DSL

This is not "cable" related, but rather a QOS related issue. The way TCP/IP works if you max out your upload, no ACK's can get out from your machine to the server you are downloading from. This will be the same for DSL if you saturate your upload.

Dropping Comcast cable for Bellsouth DSL...

Ever spend time looking at a Spectrum Analyzer? Ever closely studied the effects of impulse and/or ingress on the upstream port at the CMTS? Ever worked with the QPSK or QAM modulation used on most cable plants - looking at constellations, MER's, BER's? You would be suprised how often issues...

I agree with Nik for the most part except for the last part of his statement "The point is that if it's happening to the entire neighborhood and happening frequently, then it's not a problem at your house and can't be fixed from there. " He is most likely correct...but look at this scenario...

I have a strange IP problem.

If you really do have a switch and not a router....... Turn off your other (first) computer, power-cycle the cable modem then turn on the laptop. If you get an IP, the cable co has limited the number of CPE devices that your modem will allow conencted (how many IP's it will hand out)...

Coax cable: RG6 or RG59?

RG-6 without a doubt. Just becasue there won;t be a modem/digital boxes off these outlets, doesn't matter. The better shielding of the RG-6 will help prevent service issues (from ingress) on all outlets. Also, unlesss you get the correct fittings and tools (not from Lowes, Home Depot, etc)...
