Thanks for the recommendations. I've seen and used some design patterns before but it probably would be helpful to have a reference for it. I don't have the GoF book either so maybe I should pick that up as well. I'll also take a look at the books linked about the design of open source software...

Thanks for the replies. I was planning on heading back to the autozone where I got my battery to test it (and replace if necessary). Can they test the alternator with it still in the car or am I going to have to remove it? On this car it seems like it will be a bit difficult to take it out.
