Well I solved it somehow. I went to device manger and un-installed it, then searched for hardware then told it to look for driver and let me chose and a dialog box appeared with two Realtek drivers and one was signed so I clicked on it and it installed and everything works fine. Not sure if that...

That doesn't surprise me at all. Can anyone using Win 10 point me in the right direction on what wireless USB adapter would work?

Interesting, just tried that and it said the driver is up to date. When I go to device manager and click on the properties for the wireless adapter the device status says: Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

Linksys 2.4GHz 802.11g wireless-G PCI

I have a Linksys 2.4GHz 802.11g wireless-G PCI adapter with speedbooster connected to a Win 7 PC in my garage modelWMP54GS. I can see my WEP wireless network when asked to connect and I type in my WEP key and it clocks trying to connect but does not. There are at least 3 signal bars of strength...

Just took the HD apart and its fried. Looks like a new install coming up. And I agree silicon Vista won't be in the picture.

corkyg, you must have misread my post. I don't have any rescue disks nor does HP. Thinking I might have to take the HD apart and manually spin the disks and see if I can boot it to clone. any other ideas?

Title pretty much says it all. A friend dropped off their laptop and they want a new HD installed. HP Support online does not list a rescue disk for sale. Is there any way to install Vista with the Vista Serial Tag on the computer? Any Help is Appreciated.

yup, did swap out good memory and same nothing. Googled a new board and it's cheaper just to buy a new PC. What a throw away society we have become. thanks for all the good suggestions.
