Weird, VLC 0.8.2 works just fine but 0.8.4 does not. It outputs DD and DTS and everything.

Interesting, I think it may be a VLC issue. I dug out a copy of WinDVD that I had laying around and it decodes the DD on a DVD movie just fine and my speakers play it just fine.
I know for a fact I was using digital out (SPDIF). My receiver had always showed DD or DTS when I play a movie with it. I've been using this set-up before I reinstalled this weekend for almost 6 months without issue.
I tested the speakers using my xbox 360 and they pick up the DVD DD stream just fine. My speakers do detect DD when using VLC if I disable and then reenable digital output on my sound card settings, but the only sound that comes out is a stuttering noise.
Why does the sound have to be DD to output to a speaker? Analog cables carry sound for my other channels.

I viewed these same movies on my computer with the same set-up before and they were DD. The sound card's not doing any encoding so its not a matter of whether it has DDL, it just outputing the pure data without any processing.
