Why are there so many deals with T40s on eBay?

There's an old saying that if it's too good to be true, it probably is. I would wager that the $700 T40p machines on eBay are sold by scammers and trolls - there is just no way anyone could make a profit selling a T40p so cheaply.

ExtremeTech review of new Opteron 146 - Closest thing to the A64 this side of 9/23

I think AMD has a winner of a CPU here, but I also think that the Empire will quickly strike back with Prescott (and Yamhill if x86-64 takes off). Opteron utterly destroys Athlon XP and Pentium 4 in games, but it is also pretty clear that the Pentium 4 cleans up in multitasking.

Intel Graphics Chips..are they really bad?

Opinion on the IBM Thinkpad X31

I've never seen an X31, but I've seen an X23 and an X30. I like their low system weight and good feature set, but the 12" screen takes a bit of time to get used to. The only thing I really don't like is the lack of an optical bay, but I suppose that's the price one pays for ultraportability...

Small, semi-powerful, all purpose laptop?

I've seen the Averatec Centrino machine at Staples. It seems a bit big (because it has a 15" LCD), but it packs a hell of a lot of punch for the money. Overall, I'd say its biggest weaknesses are the 1-yr warranty, unknown service quality, and the use of Intel Extreme(ly) weak integrated graphics.
