Sorry, was thinking about 32-bit code. Yes, standard v8 does require Neon. If it is vectorized, it's very poorly done. A7 with the Accelerate library can push over 8 GFlops/s DGEMM per core, while geekbench reports less than 2. Obviously these libraries aren't available for Android, but the...

I think it's actually running at 2.0 GHz, not the 1.57 GHz listed. The MediaTek part has 2 A72 cores @ 2.0 GHz and 2 A53 @ 1.6 GHz. I really doubt these results are on the A53 cores.

Oh nice! Didn't realize there were benchmarks out yet. I don't think any of the geekbench benchmarks are vectorized, as they have to run on all hardware (no-neon, etc). If that were the case the A7 FP numbers would be much higher.

When is the best time to buy a new Intel cpu? (tick vs tock vs refresh/new vs used)

Only 10-20 tabs? This seems pretty high, I usually have like 5-8 tabs though it sometimes peaks to 30+ tabs across multiple windows. Obviously it depends on what's running in those tabs, but I'm using 2600K with HT off on Linux and my cpu utilization is around 2% across all cores. I have a...

AMD Carrizo Pre-release thread

Excavator supports 256-bit AVX2 instructions, but it needs to split them up into 2 micro instructions. So any 256-bit AVX2 instruction will look worse or be a wash compared to 128-bit AVX/SSE.

If all you do is game, then there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. Only thing I can think of is if you want 8 threads, go for i7.

Yes, I totally agree. The common code argument only goes so far. For well known benchmarks (dhrystone, Spec CPU) compilers will optimize out a lot of the code. Take for example, libquantum in CPU2006.

On x86 you could use MKL. Other's would be out of luck. These libraries show the true performance of the system though...

If it used the Accelerate library you'd see quite a large increase in many of the tests, especially in the GEMMs.
